This is just one of the curious hybrid vehicles to be found in Amsterdam.
The alleyway to my hostel in Amsterdam had been invaded.
I found Amsterdam inspiring for a lot of reasons, but it is also somewhat cursed by its own success and has the Disneyland effect in spades. I found it difficult to find the untouristed parts without a local guide. When I asked some locals at a café where I might go, one of the places suggested was Club 11, a restaurant/bar/club on the top floor of a hard-to-reach building. When I did find it, it was by accident, one afternoon as I was searching for another hard-to-reach building.
The way in to Club 11 is covered with street-style art and murals.
I happened upon a screening of Unfeld, a trippy audiovisual work, during Club 11’s off-hours. They showed it on 7 surround big screens using a massive soundsystem called Funktion One.
amsterdam initial unedited impressions
…it’s been made beautiful on purpose
…the image one has of the place seems especially potent
…the dutch sing with their headphones on
…a chill party floats by after escaping tourist purgatory: the thought- yes, i see, absolutely.
…a blissful crossways of bridges and water and bicycles, clattering in lamplight.
…many open wifi networks where in berlin they are very rare
…there is a lot of spoken english and Americans and Brits are here in higher numbers
…speakers of Dutch will readily and delightedly tell you how to say something in their language
… the tap water is praised rather than feared
… By sheer statistical probability, one is likely to see a cyclist having a cell conversation
Tonight hung out at the Berlin “Web Monday” and met a bunch of cool geeks at this really groovy shop called newthinking.
